Most men over the age of 50 suffer with some form of enlargement of the prostate gland and when other concerns arise as a result of this, it is referred to as benign prostate hyperplasia (BPH). BPH appears to caused by an elevation of the powerful androgen dihydrotestosterone (DHT) and oestrogen in the prostate tissue.
Saw Palmetto is clinically proven to treat prostate enlargement and its associated symptoms such as frequent urination, difficulty or pain when passing urine and impotence. The active fatty acids and sterols of this plant have been found to inhibit DHT's transport and binding to cell receptors, as well as reducing the activity of 5-alpha reductase, the enzyme needed for oestrogen production and for conversion of testosterone into DHT.
Saw Palmetto's ability to treat BPH may have far-reaching implications for the treatment of female hormonal dysfunctions especially polycystic ovaries which is associated with elevated DHT and female hormones and may be very responsive to saw palmetto.
Saw Palmetto also plays a vital role in helping to alleviate male pattern baldness and though clinical research is lacking, the theory behind its use for this purpose is sound. As with male pattern baldness, elevated DHT can also lead to male pattern hair loss in women suggesting a potential value to saw palmetto. Not surprisingly, the problem appears to be especially common in women who suffer from PCOS and those going through the menopause.
